HU provides a collegial atmosphere in which students join together in community to study and research personal and collective well-being. It attracts into its graduate and certificate programs mature, adult students who are committed to creative self-development, scholarly exploration and research, and compassionate service. Students entering the Easy-Access Certificate programs are encouraged to broaden their knowledge and expertise in their chosen area of interest in an environment that supports learning that is unique to each individual. Prior academic credentials are not required to enter this program. Courses offered are graduate level courses but may be taken by Certificate and Open Enrollment students as well as graduate students. It is assumed that all students resonate with HU’s mission and vision statements and its guiding principles.
HU students and alumni come from such diverse backgrounds as art, education, ministry, counseling, healthcare, massage and body therapies, spiritual healing, music, law, business, allopathic, osteopathic, naturopathic, and chiropractic medicine, nursing, physical therapy, psychology, and psychiatry. Many are already engaged in professions, research, or work that relates to the mission of HU and may have discovered that their understanding and experience of healing has surpassed the definition under which they are currently working. Because of students' involvement with families, work, and profession, the unique, blended program of distant and residential learning offered by HU is especially practical. Its curriculum is designed to develop students' capabilities further so that, upon graduation, they may engage more effectively in the profession, research, or work of their choice. HU appeals equally to mystically inclined scientists and scientifically inclined mystics who wish to explore, integrate, and research the historical, theological, and scientific foundations of body, mind, and spirit as these foundations relate to health and healing.
HU recognizes a global need that goes beyond national and continental boundaries and welcomes the participation of all qualified students from any country on earth. Students who apply from non-English speaking areas need to have an adequate command of the English language. The focus of the HU program is on various areas of spiritual healing. Special emphasis Tracks within the HU program educate graduates in four areas of expertise: Counseling Intuition, Spiritual Direction, Integrative Healthcare, and Transformational Psychology. Rather than focusing on a preparation for national certification or licensure, HU programs prepare students, through self-development, scholarly exploration, and research, to contribute to specific areas of professional interest.
PROSPECTS AFTER GRADUATION Since the HU program degree began in 2001, HU graduates have found innovative ways to either chart new career opportunities or to integrate their knowledge, skills, and research outcomes into previously established professions and careers. In keeping with its stated visions, HU encourages graduates to emphasize a continued spiritual focus that will contribute to a more holistic balance of health and well-being in their professions and communities.
